Full Course Description

The Fuel Tank Safety Initial Course provides essential knowledge and skills for aviation maintenance and airworthiness staff who are responsible for the safety, inspection, and ongoing management of aircraft fuel systems. This training was developed in response to accidents such as TWA 800 and Thai Airways 2001, which highlighted the catastrophic risks posed by fuel tank explosions. By understanding the history, causes, and regulatory framework, participants will gain the competence needed to protect both aircraft and passengers.

The course covers the regulatory requirements set out in EASA Part 145 Appendix IV, Part M Appendix XII, and Part CAMO Appendix III to AMC4 CAMO.A.305(g), ensuring compliance with mandatory Fuel Tank Safety Training obligations. It also addresses FAA’s SFAR 88 requirements, giving participants a complete overview of both European and U.S. regulatory perspectives. By the end, trainees will have a comprehensive understanding of Airworthiness Limitations (ALI) and Critical Design Configuration Control Limitations (CDCCL).

Through structured modules, the course examines ignition sources, wiring failures, and system design vulnerabilities, as well as the corrective actions implemented by regulators and manufacturers. Learners will explore flammability reduction methods, inerting systems, and the engineering controls that continue to evolve to ensure safe operations. Case studies from historical accidents are used to reinforce lessons and show the real-world implications of unsafe maintenance practices or overlooked design features.

This training is divided into two phases. Phase 1 is designed for quality managers, planners, and support staff who require familiarisation, while Phase 2 provides detailed training for certifying staff, supervisors, and engineers directly involved in fuel system maintenance and inspections. The course combines theory with practical application, requiring learners to demonstrate understanding through interactive quizzes and assessments.

On successful completion, participants will be able to identify CDCCL/ALI items in manufacturer documentation, apply regulatory requirements correctly, and plan or execute Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives related to fuel tank systems. More importantly, they will be equipped to recognise safety-critical tasks, maintain compliance, and contribute directly to preventing fuel tank ignition events.
