Course Description

The Health and Safety Initial Course provides a comprehensive introduction to workplace health and safety, equipping participants with the knowledge to recognise hazards, understand risks, and apply effective control measures. Designed to give learners a solid grounding in legislation and practical safety management, the course is suitable for all staff, regardless of role or industry.

Participants begin by exploring the origins of health and safety law, from early workplace reforms to the development of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent “Six Pack” regulations. They gain an understanding of how health and safety legislation has evolved, the roles of enforcement authorities, and the responsibilities placed on employers, employees, and other stakeholders.

The training then introduces key concepts such as hazard identification, risk assessment, and the principles of prevention. Learners are guided through the process of evaluating likelihood and severity, applying controls, and recording and reviewing risk assessments to ensure they remain suitable and sufficient. Practical examples are used to demonstrate how these principles apply to everyday workplace activities.

A wide range of hazards is covered, including physical, mechanical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks. Participants also study specific workplace dangers such as slips, trips and falls, fire safety, electricity, noise, vibration, working at height, and hazardous substances (COSHH). This ensures a broad awareness of the issues that commonly contribute to accidents, ill health, and lost working time.

The course also examines safety equipment, machinery, and the role of personal protective equipment (PPE). Participants learn about legal requirements for equipment use, the importance of safe maintenance, and how PPE fits into the hierarchy of hazard control. Case studies help reinforce how prevention, control, and protection measures work together to reduce risks.

Finally, the course addresses accident reporting, incident investigation, enforcement, and the importance of occupational health and welfare facilities. By the end of the training, participants will understand not only the legal and moral reasons for health and safety but also the practical steps that make workplaces safer, healthier, and more productive.

Why Take This Course?

Health and safety is not just a legal obligation but also a moral and business responsibility. This course equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to reduce risks, prevent accidents, and protect the wellbeing of themselves and others. With millions of working days lost annually to injury and ill health, effective health and safety training is vital for personal and organisational resilience.

Taking this course ensures compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and associated regulations, reducing the risk of prosecution, financial penalties, or reputational damage. It demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive workplace where employees can perform at their best.

Ultimately, this training helps foster a culture of safety and responsibility. By completing it, participants will be able to identify hazards, carry out effective risk assessments, and apply practical controls that lead to safer operations, lower costs, and higher productivity.
