General Awareness of
Working at Heights
This course provides essential training on the safe planning and execution of tasks carried out at height, one of the most common high-risk activities in the workplace. It equips participants with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to prevent falls, reduce risks, and comply with legal requirements.
The training begins with an overview of the legislation and responsibilities related to working at height. Learners will understand employer and employee duties, risk assessment requirements, and the hierarchy of control measures that should always be considered before work begins.
Next, the course explores safe systems of work, including the selection of access equipment such as ladders, scaffolds, and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs). Emphasis is placed on how to choose the right equipment for the job, how to use it safely, and the importance of pre-use checks and inspections.
Participants will also learn about fall prevention and fall protection systems, including harnesses, lanyards, anchor points, and collective protective measures like guardrails. The training demonstrates both the strengths and limitations of these systems, highlighting how improper use can create risks rather than control them.
Finally, the course covers emergency procedures and rescue planning, ensuring workers know what to do if an incident occurs. By the end, participants will have a solid understanding of how to work safely at height, protect themselves and others, and contribute to a stronger safety culture in their workplace.
